E1b55K-deleted Adenoviruses replicate in p53-deficient tumor cells, but not in normal cells with functional p53. The host cell is destroyed through lysis as the viral progeny spreads to the surrounding cells.

Oncolytic Virotherapy

This 3D visualization depicts the use of gene-edited adenoviruses to selectively destroy host cancer cells. In both style and formatting, it is intended for editorial use, namely in cover art.

Based on Protein Data Bank entries, the 3D render shows the virus's genetic content within its open capsid. This edited viral DNA is a targeted weapon against tumor cells, whose deregulated cell cycle allows the virus to reproduce within its infected host and subsequently kill it via lysis. The replicated viruses spread to further hosts, but thanks to their functional p53, healthy cells are unaffected.
